What is Circumcision?
Circumcision is a surgical procedure in which the foreskin of the penis is removed. It is done for medical, religious and cultural reasons. There are many different types of circumcisions, but they follow a similar procedure.
Here are the steps followed in the procedure of a circumcision:
- Preparation:
Clean and sterilize the surgical site.
Administer local anesthesia to numb the area.
- Marking and Clamping:
Measure and mark the foreskin to determine the extent of removal.
Use a clamp or surgical device to secure the foreskin and prevent bleeding.
- Incision and Removal:
Make an incision to remove the foreskin, either using a scalpel, scissors, or a surgical device like a Gomco clamp or Plastibell.
- Hemostasis:
Control bleeding using sutures, cauterization, or pressure.

Having a circumcision can affect you in many ways. It is like a painful but beneficial experience. Here are the affects a circumcision can have on you:

- Reduced risk of certain infections, including urinary tract infections (UTIs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like HIV and HPV.
- Potential changes in sensation due to removal of nerve-rich tissue (subject to individual perception).
- For infants, no long-term memory of the procedure typically forms.
- Adults and older children may experience emotional responses ranging from relief (e.g., for medical reasons) to anxiety, depending on the context and consent involved.
The process of circumcision may make you feel certain ways. Like the following:
- For Newborns and Infants:

With Anesthesia: Local anesthetic (injection or cream) reduces pain significantly, but babies may still feel pressure or mild discomfort.
