Circumcision is a procedure performed to remove the foreskin (also called the prepuce) that lies on the glans (head) of the penis. This is a relatively simpler and an outpatient procedure done at doctor’s office/clinic.
Why do men opt for circumcision?
- Hygiene – removal of foreskin makes maintenance of penis health (penile health) easier. Chances of deposition of smegma go down reducing the risks of penile cancer.
- Medical reasons – Circumcision is done in men suffering from foreskin related problems such as phimosis, Paraphimosis, balanitis etc. Some men opt for circumcision to increase the time of ejaculation and there are limited studies that circumcision can help reduce the chances of acquiring Sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases.
- Religious reasons – Many religions in the world recommend men to get circumcised by certain age.
When can a person with penis get circumcised?
There is no fixed age when a person with penis can get circumcised. Circumcision can be done on a male baby or an adolescent or teen or even at a later stage of life depending on the need of the patient.
Stapler Circumcision (Anstomat Circumcision) – procedure and benefits
Stapler circumcision or Anstomat circumcision is a method followed to circumcise a man. The procedure involves using a device called ‘Anstomat or Stapler’, so the name Stapler or Anstomat Circumcision. In short, the procedure involves usage of a device that has an inner bell and an outer bell as shown in the picture.
The inner bell is placed on the glans of the penis, inside/under the foreskin. If the surgery is done to treat phimosis, the foreskin may need to be cut to insert the inner bell. After carefully placing the inner bell, the outer bell is moved onto the penis and the prongs are squeezed. This trims off the foreskin to the place where the inner bell marks and the stapler is placed in the position for a minute or two.
If your doctor is using a 2nd generation stapler, a small ring with metal clips will remain after removing the device. These clips try to seal the cut and helps in healing faster. In case of a 3rd generation stapler, silicone ring will be left in the circumcised area instead of the metal clips. During recovery period, the metal clips or the silicone ring can cause a little bit of inflammation and irritation that can be controlled by pain killers and anti-inflammatory medicines. After few days during recovery, the metal clips or the silicone ring falls off automatically.
Chennai Circumcision Clinic is one of the very few clinics in Chennai that hosts experienced sexologists who have been performing thousands of stapler circumcisions without any post operation complications.
Benefits of stapler circumcision:
- More precise cutting than conventional methods.
- Minimal injury to the tissue
- Lower blood loss
- Quick recovery and fewer complications during healing.
It is important that you visit a good doctor and a good clinic to get circumcised because the recovery depends on the hygiene maintained at the clinic/hospital and how well they sterilize the surgery room and equipment.
Laser Circumcision
The bottom line of circumcision procedure is the same – removal of foreskin from the penis. All what changes is how it is removed. In stapler circumcision, a device is used to trim off the foreskin but in a laser circumcision procedure, laser is used to cut off the skin.
Using laser to perform circumcision has its own benefits. The cut off will be more precise than using a scalpel. Laser circumcision has lesser blood loss during the procedure and also the wound heals quickly effectively reducing the recovery time by a day or two. Quicker healing means lower risk of post operative complications or chances of infections and there by lesser visits to your doctor.
Which circumcision procedure should you go for?
Both laser circumcision and stapler circumcision procedures have their own merits and risks. The best person to answer this question is your sexologist or doctor who is performing the surgery. Depending on the cause and the expertise of the doctor, he/she may suggest you the right procedure to go for. If you do have some knowledge about the procedure or taking a second opinion, you can discuss with your doctor in detail and then take a call.
