Circumcision Procedure in Infants:
Infant circumcision has different types of procedures. These procedures ensure that the baby does not suffer excessive pain or discomfort. While there are differences the following steps are common in all of them:
- The first step:
An assistant either hold the baby or place it into a circumcision brace.
- The second step:
A doctor will use a clamp to prevent bleeding and then they will cut the foreskin with a scalpel.
- The third and final step:
Involves applying an antibiotic ointment or petroleum jelly to the wound and covering it with protective gauze.
In another method of circumcision, a plastic cup is placed underneath the foreskin but over the end of the penis. A doctor ties a suture around the foreskin and the circulation is cut off. They will then remove the foreskin with a scalpel. Another option is to leave the cup on until the foreskin falls off by itself.
The recovery period for circumcision is around 7–10 days. In that time, parents and other caregivers need to take some measures to treat the wound and reduce the chance of complications.
Pain relief:
The baby may cry at irregular intervals after circumcision. Their sleeping and feeding patterns may alter.
