Causes of Phimosis:
Phimosis is a condition in which the patient is unable to retract the skin covering the head of the penis.
If you or your son have phimosis, there are several reasons it might develop, including the following:
- Poor hygiene:
This is a common cause of phimosis. A lack of hygiene for your penis could make it susceptible to infection.
- Skin illnesses:
Eczema, psoriasis, and lichen sclerosus are some skin illnesses that can result in phimosis.
- Scar tissue:
Scar tissue in the form of preputial adhesions, keeps the foreskin attached to the tip of your penis.
- Infections:
Includes infections under the foreskin and sexually transmitted infections.
Symptoms of Phimosis:
Phimosis does not always lead to symptoms. When it does, however, some of the symptoms may include:
- Infection:
Phimosis can cause urinary tract infections. UTIs can be discovered from blood in your urine, pain or burning when urinating and urinary incontinence.
- Foreskin pain:
Your foreskin may hurt. It might also have discharge, too.
- White ring:
The opening of your foreskin has a white ring that looks like scar tissue.
- Swelling:
Swelling can also be Inflammation. It occurs from phimosis when it causes the growth of other conditions in the penis.
- Soreness:
This soreness comes from pain while urinating or when partaking in sexual activity.
- Strong odours from the penis:
Phimosis can cause the penis to have a strong and foul odour due to smegma which is a build up of oils, moisturiser and skin cells under the foreskin of a penis.
Treatments for Phimosis:
Treatment options for phimosis depend on the severity of the case.
For mild cases the following treatments are offered:
- Steroid cream:
Your healthcare provider may suggest a steroid cream to apply on your penile skin. You will need to gently stretch the foreskin after two weeks of using the cream.
- Maintaining penile hygiene:
You will be advised to wash the penis daily with lukewarm water and to dry it tenderly to improve its hygiene.
For more serious cases the following treatment is offered:
- Surgery:
If your child has phimosis, their provider might make a small incision in their foreskin so that they will be able to pull it back. If you are an adult with scar tissue on your penis, then your provider will probably recommend circumcision. Circumcision removes the foreskin completely.
